Competitor Analysis

Benchmark your visibility and find competitive advantages

Overview

Understanding how AI systems position your competitors is essential for strategic planning. XAUDIENT's Territory Maps reveal where you lead, where you lag, and where opportunities exist to capture more Share of AI Voice.

1. Understanding Territory Maps

A Territory Map visualizes how AI distributes visibility across your competitive set:

Territory Map Components

Your Brand — Your Share of AI Voice
Competitor A — Primary competitor visibility
Others — Combined visibility of smaller players

Territory Maps update with each Prediction Audit, showing how the competitive landscape shifts over time.

2. Competitive Metrics

SAV Against Competitors

SAV is already your share of all mentions across your confirmed competitors:

SAV = brand mentions ÷ (brand mentions + confirmed competitors' mentions) × 100%

In a market of four companies (you and three competitors), 25% = equal share. Above 25% = outperforming.

Head-to-Head Wins

For comparison queries (e.g., "A vs B"), track win rate:

Win Rate = Queries where you rank higher / Total comparison queries

Visibility Gap

Queries where competitors appear but you don't:

Visibility Gap = Competitor mentions - Your mentions (per query category)

Negative gap = you're ahead. Positive gap = opportunity to close.

3. Competitor Discovery

XAUDIENT automatically discovers competitors through multiple methods:

AI Response Analysis

Brands that appear alongside yours in AI responses to relevant queries.

Category Mapping

Brands AI associates with your product category or industry.

Website Analysis

Competitors mentioned or compared on your own website.

Manual Addition

Competitors you add based on your market knowledge.

Tip: Review discovered competitors during onboarding. Sometimes AI identifies competitors you hadn't considered, revealing blind spots in your market understanding.

4. Competitive Strategies by Position

When You're the Leader

If your SAV exceeds competitors:

  • • Defend: Monitor for competitive gains in key query categories
  • • Expand: Capture adjacent query categories where you're weaker
  • • Strengthen: Improve context classification from "Leader" to staying there
  • • Document: Track what's working to replicate in other areas

When You're a Challenger

If you're close to the leader but not first:

  • • Differentiate: Emphasize unique strengths the leader lacks
  • • Niche: Dominate specific query categories or use cases
  • • Compare: Create content that favorably compares you to the leader
  • • Wait: Leaders can stumble; be ready to capture shifting preference

When You're Trailing

If competitors significantly outpace you:

  • • Prioritize: Focus on 2-3 high-value query categories
  • • Build: Create authoritative content AI will reference
  • • Earn: Get mentioned by industry publications and analysts
  • • Publish: GEO assets (llms.txt, knowledge graph, disambiguation files) to help AI identify you accurately

5. Extracting Competitive Intelligence

Your competitor data reveals strategic insights:

Messaging Analysis

How does AI describe your competitors? What features, benefits, or use cases does it emphasize? This reveals what's resonating in your market.

Tone Comparison

Compare Tone scores across competitors. If a competitor has a notably higher or lower Tone, investigate why.

Provider Preferences

Some competitors may be favored by specific AI providers. ChatGPT might prefer one brand while Claude prefers another.

Trend Detection

Track competitor SAV over time. A sudden rise may indicate a successful campaign, product launch, or viral content.

6. Managing Your Competitive Set

Your competitive set should evolve as your market changes:

Adding Competitors

  • • New market entrants
  • • Adjacent products expanding into your space
  • • International competitors gaining traction

Removing Competitors

  • • Companies that have pivoted away
  • • Brands that have been acquired
  • • Products that have been discontinued

Recommendation: Review your competitive set regularly. Markets shift, and yesterday's competitor may not be today's.
